4-H Volunteers Focus on the Art of Leadership Academy

Forty-three thought leaders from 21 states challenged current ideas about and reached innovative solutions regarding 4-H volunteer development at the 2006 Art of Leadership Volunteer Academy recently held at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center in Washington, D.C.

Each team of one 4-H staff member and one 4-H volunteer returned home to implement training for an anticipated 5,000 additional volunteers. They collectively committed to begin the work of attracting, developing and retaining volunteers for the next generation of 4-H young people. National 4-H Council administered the 2006 Art of Leadership Academy with funding from Monsanto Corporation and UPS Foundation.

Steve Gunderson, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Council on Foundations, discusses The Changing Landscape of Non-Profit Organizations at the recent Art of Leadership Volunteer Academy. This stimulated thoughts as the purpose of AOL was to provide a forum where leaders challenge their thinking about volunteerism, our changing society, and the impacts on 4-H in the future.

Dr. Cathann Kress, Director, National 4-H Headquarters, provided food for thought with her speech Change Reaction: Understanding and Embracing the Future of 4-H Volunteerism. Essential Elements of 4-H are also embodied.

F. Ellen Netting challenged the AOL participants with her speech Stretching beyond Our Traditional Organizational Models. Dr. Netting is a Professor of Social Work at Virginia Commonwealth University and author of Organizational Practice: A Social Workers Guide to Understanding Human Services.
